In the event of severe weather, the decision to alter the class and work schedule at ASL will be made by the appropriate administrative offices.  Given the inherent variability of the weather in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, there will be occasions when classes will not be canceled even though conditions in some areas surrounding ASL (Grundy) may make travel hazardous.

When hazardous weather conditions occur in the immediate area, ASL may operate on an altered or delayed schedule or may make other changes to attendance requirements.  Please, refer to the following options when you receive an announcement regarding schedule changes.  Regardless of required schedule alterations, ASL students will have card access to the Library (and Security on duty) as set forth on the Library Hours Page although the Circulation Desk may not be staffed.  Information about such schedule changes will be available from a variety of sources as listed below:

ASL’s website:  An announcement will be posted on the home page.

Email Message:  Messages regarding schedule changes will be sent to ASL email accounts.

Text Message: Students and employees who have signed up for the alert system will be sent a text message regarding schedule changes.

Weather Hotline:  By calling 276-935-4349, EXT. 1400, you can access schedule changes.

When ASL is operating on an altered or delayed schedule or during any severe weather condition, individuals who live outside the Town of Grundy’s corporation limits should use their best judgment about whether it is safe to drive from their homes. Students who commute to ASL should also use their best judgment on whether to leave ASL early on days when inclement weather strikes during the school day.  Students who miss class due to the weather are responsible for any missed academic work.  Absences accrued during inclement weather while ASL is in session are not considered excused.

Inclement Weather Schedule Options:

Any classes scheduled to begin after 12:00 noon will start and end on a normal schedule.  Professors may choose to cancel individual classes, but it is their responsibility to notify students and staff.  Staff reports for work at 12:00 p.m.  Schedule changes for meetings and events are the responsibility of the event organizer.  Security will work a normal schedule.
